EASTRIDGE YOUTH GARAGE SALE

Proceeds go to help fund youth activities.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 23

8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
The youth garage sale is coming up quickly and we are still in need of volunteer help and donations! This is such an important fund-raiser for the youth and it helps to make events happen such as mission trips, retreats, Calvin Crest, Great Escape, etc. We need any and all help on Friday, August 22nd (all day) for set-up and on Saturday for the sale.

Donations are now being accepted. Small items can be left in room L8. Not sure what to donate? Items such as home décor, furniture, books, toys, baby items, appliances, seasonal items, jewelry and many other items all sell well! We simply ask that donations are in good, usable condition. We’re not accepting donations of clothing and exercise machines this year. We also welcome bake sale contributions! We’ll have a bake sale all day and we’ll serve lunch, too.

Large items will be accepted, but not until Monday, August 18, since we have limited storage. If you are donating large items, they can be left in the Welcome Center after this date. If you need someone to pick them up, call the church office at 488-7844 and leave a message for Cam McDaniel, and arrangements will be made. Thanks for your support!
On Your Mark...Get Set…Read!
B.Y.O.B. (bring your own bible) in 2009, or we’ll provide one for you! 2009 is the Year of the Bible at Eastridge. The Bible is essential to our faith. It is God’s word to us. It has sustained millions of people throughout their lives. It will be the focus of our congregational life next year.

Yet most of us don’t know the Bible very well and we want to change that for our Eastridge believers in 2009. The Session approved a Year of the Bible program sponsored by the Christian Education Committee. The program is an opportunity and a challenge to read through the entire Bible in one year! We will be providing help, guidance and small group support throughout the year. Any version of the Bible that you prefer is fine, but the small group leaders, adult Sunday School and sermons will use the New Revised Standard Version.

The program will be explained in more detail in the upcoming weeks. The Year of the Bible will require commitment, but the effort will be worth the time. If you want to help us in planning for the program, talk to Pastor J.P. jpcarlson@eastridge.org or 488-7844.

Interim Executive Lowell Knause directed me to the following article on Calvin’s birthday in 2009 and I want to pass it on to you, in part anyway …

Calvin!? (Notes from the PCUSA)

“Who was Calvin and what is the significance of his legacy for today? These perennial questions arise with special urgency as the anniversary of Calvin’s birth in 2009 approaches. For Reformed churches, Calvin is a continuing source of inspiration and therefore our PCUSA churches are looking forward to the celebration with a sense of deep gratitude and as an opportunity of their own commitment and renewal. Presbyterians in 2008-2009 would like to share the true legacy of Calvin with Christians of other traditions and with society. At the same time they are aware that the image of Calvin is often presented in a negative perspective. Like no other Reformer of the 16th century he has become the victim of clichés. Four stereotypes invariably return when his name is mentioned in public:
•	his grim concept of double predestination: God elects some for salvation and destines others to damnation;
•	the moral austerity which he imposed on the people of Geneva;
•	his participation in the execution of Michael Servetus;
•	his role in the historical development of modernity, in particular modern capitalism. For some he is one of the fathers of modernity, for others he laid the ground for a prosperity-oriented spirituality.
Though these perceptions of Calvin are widely accepted and taken for granted by many, they represent a reduction and, in fact, a distortion of the historical reality…they lead to an attitude of prejudice which obstructs access to the true significance of the Reformer… Calvin belongs to the second generation of the Reformation movement. Through his teaching and his life he has decisively contributed to the consolidation of the Reformation… effort to go beyond the widespread stereotypes [of the man] must…be guided… by three principles:
1.	…What was ultimately the driving force of his theology and life? Particular and problematic aspects of his teaching, like, for instance, his doctrine of predestination, must be seen and interpreted in the framework of his primary intentions in understanding God, creation, human salvation, and the fulfillment of all things.
2.	Often… held responsible…for the modern world, in particular capitalism [and] in the eyes of others…the narrow Biblicist moralism which characterizes certain Protestant churches. To get an authentic image of Calvin, it is necessary to be guided by his own intentions and utterances.
3.	To get an authentic image of Calvin, it is necessary to be guided by his own intentions and utterances. Calvin lived in a very particular situation—attacked by enemies…[he was] a theological writer… drawn—against his personal inclination and will—into the struggles of his time.
Calvin was no saint; and any attempt to draw an idealized picture of him is bound to fail. … his response to conflicts in Geneva could be harsh…. Even against the yardstick of his own convictions he failed in decisive moments. His use of language against theological adversaries renders the reading of certain of his writings difficult….[and] certain aspects of his teaching are no longer pertinent and cannot be maintained. But… Calvin remains an outstanding witness of the Christian message and deserves to be carefully listened to today.”
